IT'S A GOODAY FOR COLIN'S MEN

In a dramatic ending to Division 4 of the 2001/02 season of the Chelmsford & District League, Baddow D snatched the divisional title in their final game. Team Captain, Colin Gooday, himself unable to play since Christmas because of tennis elbow, praised the efforts of his team, saying; "the boys have put in a tremendous effort, especially Allan who has come good in the last two games where it mattered to make the win possible". The winning possibility was set up in the previous week when the team overcame ECC H 8:2, with sub John Patman playing a major role winning all three to support Robin Armstrong and Allan Playle. This left the team needing 3 points in the final encounter with divisional leaders OC's C to steal the title.  The team started well racing to a 3:0 lead, with Allan taking a bonus game from Ray Mitchell, only to be pegged back to 4:2 after the first 6 singles. The OC's spirit was however finally broken in the crucial doubles when Robin and Graham fought back from 16:19 down in the third to steal the game with a net edge at deuce. Robin and Graham then each took their last singles for a decisive 7:3 victory and the title by a clear point! Robin keeping a clean sheet and playing a vital role in the winning doubles to gain "man-of-the match" award. A brilliant effort.

It's all smiles for the D team of Allan Playle, Captain Colin Gooday, Robin Armstrong and Graham Turner, following their dramatic win over OC's C on 16 April to snatch the
Div 4 title.
