BADDOW DO THE DOUBLE For the fifth time in the last 10 years Baddow Village have taken the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League's Restricted Knockout Cup (or 4 Down Cup). The Baddow A team of Robin Armstrong, Frank Neill and Graham Turner won in style with a convincing 5:2 victory over fellow fourth division side Elmtree Graphics. The previous week Robin & Graham had featured in the Baddow side that snatched the C&DTTL Division 4 title, so making it a double celebration. Robin and Frank got the team off to a brilliant start with a fighting doubles win against the odds. This was followed by singles successes for Frank and Graham, although Robin narrowly missed out to the Elmtree No.1 Tony Vassallo, the leading division 4 player. Baddow should have made the match secure in the next doubles, but a dreadful missed forehand kill at 19 all in the third from Graham allowed the game to slip to the Elmtree pair at deuce. It was left to Frank and Robin to wrap up the match in the next two singles. On the night Frank remained unbeaten taking both his singles and a share in the opening doubles, deservedly earning him the man-of-the-match award. It was truly a champagne moment for the Baddow team who had dropped just 4 games through the whole competition.
The Baddow Junior team of John Patman, Ryan Pitt and Thomas Hill were not so successful in their C&DTTL Junior KO Cup Final. Up against the holders and favourites ECC A (who have won the competition every time it has been played for in the last 10 years) they failed to live up to their expectations of themselves. The biggest difference between the two sides being Baddow's inability to make any headway in the doubles. John took his only singles before the team went down 5:1.
And in the League's Handicap KO Cup Baddow F (Neil Gooday, John & Mark Patman and Richard Upson) have made it through to the final. A drama packed semi-final against a strong Excalibur side, containing 3 second division players, saw Baddow slip from a 3:1 lead to 3:4 behind. John, playing off a generous -3 handicap pulled it back to 4:4 leaving Neil to face the final game against League Chairman Richard Hiskey who had beaten Neil by the narrowest of margins from scratch the previous week in a League fixture. On this occasion Neil had to also give away 5 points so the omens did not look good. Neil however played magnificently taking the set 2 straight with room to spare and so the match 5:4. Watch out for news of the final.
