NEWCOMERS ATTRACTED

National Table Tennis Week from the 4 - 11 August provided Baddow Village with the perfect opportunity to open its doors to all comers. And even the local media got in on the act with an article and pictures appearing in the Essex Chronicle on the 16 August (reported on the Chelmsford League website - Essex Chronicle 16 August). At Baddow the festivities started on Monday when players from any club were invited to a pay and play evening. This proved an excellent evening with players from at least 6 local clubs and at all levels of the game turning up for general play.

The main open event was on Tuesday, when people could 'come and try' or meet and talk with local League Officials and Club Officers about table tennis opportunities. The event was advertised in the local newspaper and by means of a leaflet distribution in the immediate neighbourhood of the hall as well as through the Club and league web-sites. It was pleasing therefore that each of these forms of advertising attracted visitors to the event. And even better news, at least 3 new playing members have been attracted to the League, 3 juniors have signed up for coaching sessions, and two new families have been attracted to the club. All in all a very worthwhile evening. The week was rounded off on Friday with our own Club Night, and it was great to see newcomers that had come on Tuesday returning to start playing on Friday. Perhaps we need more weeks of this nature spread over the year to continue to create new interest in the sport of table tennis?

Newest recruit, 8 year old Aled Upson, tries out at junior coaching as part of the open evening on 6 August. And from the look of it, it seems he will soon be following in the footsteps of his older brother 11 year old Haydn, who is now well established as a player in the Chelmsford league's Introductory competition, CLICK.
