A DAY AT THE DERBY It was a true 'derby' night at Baddow last Monday in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. With all three league matches being played at the hall featuring only Baddow teams! On centre court, so to speak, were the youngsters of Baddow M, the youngest team in the league, featuring Adam & Hannah Pitt (no they are not husband and wife - yet!) playing out their league fixture in the CLICK competition. In fact in that competition there are quite often 'derby' matches, as there are no fewer than 5 Baddow teams in the one CLICK division. And what a match it turned out to be! Some brilliant doubles play by Adam & Hannah leaving the match score finely balanced at 3:2 in favour of the their older rivals of Baddow L (Dylan Robbin-Coker & Matthew Shipperd). Our reporter suggests that the main reason the match was so close was because Adam & Hannah frightened the life out of their rivals - as maybe the picture suggests! After all it was approaching Halloween! Actually, they played rather well!
On the adjacent table was a Division 5 clash between Baddow E & F. This had all the ingredients for a very close match. But with the F side forced to field Ron Arthur as a substitute and Mark Patman and Richard Upson seeming a little out of sorts, the score-line suggests the match was rather one sided. The E Team of Robert Wigley, Colin Gooday and Mike Robinson romping home 9:1.
And now for some very rare footage indeed. For on the top table was a Division 3 clash between the B & C Teams. Originally Neil Gooday's side should have been the B Team, but due to various circumstances they eventually became the C Team. So how would it go on the table, which side would prove to be the stronger? Well the match certainly could not have been closer. In the end it was Duncan Elloy for the B team who made the difference, especially when he took his game against Neil 2 straight. Duncan's trio of wins, plus 1 each for Andy Skues and Alastair Brown and the doubles ensured that the B Team came through 6:4. Unluckiest man of the night, Geoff Morris who, as Ann Robinson would say, went home with nothing! But I wouldn't be so sure the score will be the same next time round!
And these were not the first derby matches seen at Baddow this season - nor will they be the last. Just 2 weeks earlier in Division 6 of the League Baddow G took on Baddow H, both teams playing 4 a-s-side! Very confusing for the scorers - fortunately Club Chairman Peter Revell was on hand to ensure that they got it right. The G Team featured Diane Pitt, Chris High, Bob Francis and Martyn Chattey. The H Team Ron Arthur, Fred Henwood, Eric Clift and Eleni Manolitsaki. Eleni playing her first ever league match. Again the match score went with rank - just! 6:4 to the G Team, despite the efforts of Ron who won all 3 singles. Again, don't expect it will be the same next time round! And the further unique thing about this match. Three of the players were new to the Baddow Club.
