Final Encounters

It's been a pretty good year for Baddow Village in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Knock Out Cup competitions. The Club successfully worked its way to the final of three events, the 2 Down, 6 Down and Handicap KO Cup competitions. But on this occasion the Club were just not able to bring home the silverware, having to be content with runners-up spot in all three events. The pictures tell their own story.

The Baddow Village A Team of
Waseem Qureshi, Alastair Piper and Adrian Pitt
had to settle for runners-up spot when they took on
ECC in the Final of the 2Down KO Cup.
Although they had been runaway winners of Division 2,
when it came to the cup final they couldn't repeat their league form going down 5:2 for a surprise defeat

The picture shows the Baddow Village team of Bill Chester, Ron Arthur and Fred Henwood receiving their runners-up award from League Official
Melanie Bonnett in the 6Down KO Cup.
In a match featuring the two oldest players in the League, John Macfarlane of OC's and our own Freddie, the outcome was totally uncertain right to the end. It was that close! A blistering match played in the best possible spirit was only determined with the final doubles when Ron & Fred just lost out 21:17 in the third to give the title to OC's.

League Chairman Richard Hiskey (left) presents the Baddow Village F Team of Gareth Joice, Richard Upson and Mark Patman
with their runners-up award in the Final of the Handicap KO Cup.

This match was just like "the one that got away". For it seemed no matter what Mark and Richard did they just couldn't win! Gareth made the most of his slightly generous handicap to take his three singles in style, but Mark went down 22:20 in the third to Mohammed Mohseni and then 23:21 in the third to Jeff Lewington, before a 21:8 in the third defeat to Alan Thompson. And it wasn't much better for Richard. After a bad start he lost out 23:21, 22:20 to Mohammed to give the ECC E team the match 5:3. It was real nail-biting stuff and excellent entertainment for the small crowd of spectators.
