DOUBLE CELEBRATION FOR CLUB NO.1

The Club's annual singles tournament, The Tom Burns Handicap Singles, gave club No.1 Waseem Qureshi a double cause for celebration this month. Having just celebrated the birth of his second son, Umer, Waseem went on to celebrate just a week later his first victory in the club singles in 10 years. But it was no easy path to victory as the summary results and pictures below will show. Held over two evenings 24 & 27 June the event attracted a record entry of 39 members and could have been more but for the fact that a few members found they couldn't make it on the day. With such a large entry scheduling all the group and knock out matches was a difficult task, very well managed by Social Secretary Ryan Pitt, organising his first tournament. the first stage of the event was played in groups of 3 with the top two qualifying for the knock-out stage. The results below reflect only the knock-out stage! A full report on the Tournament will be published at a later date.

The latest in designer table tennis wear? Or is it that Ralph Turbin's shorts indicate a chequered table tennis career? Sadly they didn't help him, Ralph losing out in the groups to Michael Rostoft and Steve Clift.

It may be all smiles here, but it was Norman Purkiss (left) who was smiling most, come the end of a marathon semi-final in which he overcame Neil Gooday 19 in-the-third. Reaching the final of the Tom Burns event for the second time in 3 years. About time we sorted out his handicap!

New boy, Bill Chester (left) has had a fabulous first season with the Club. And his competitive spirit shone brightly as he took on
Waseem Qureshi
in the second semi final of the singles event. But this was destined to be Waseem's year, and after a pulsating match it was Waseem who triumphed at 18 in the third.

Club Chairman, Peter Revell, presents Waseem with the

after a nail-biting final in which he sneaked home 20 in-the-third
