THE CURTAIN RAISES ON A NEW SEASON On Monday 15th September Baddow raised the curtain on its new venue for league and Cup matches. After many years in Great Baddow at the "Holy Hut", the Club has now moved completely to the other side of town! The new premises for all League matches is Newlands Spring Community Centre, Dickens Place, Chelmsford. This is a modern well equipped venue capable of holding 4 league matches simultaneously. The Club celebrated the move with 3 pre-season friendlies. The A team, who will be moving up to the Division 1 of the Chelmsford league in the forthcoming season, of Waseem Qureshi, Peter Barrett and Adrian Pitt, took on the B team of Alastair Piper, Julie Vansertima and John Patman. Julie proved just what a class act she still is, taking singles off Waseem at 11:9 in the fifth, and off Peter 3:1. Adrian was unbeaten for the A team who ran out 7:3 winners. The new C team led by Frank Neill and including Nick Wool and new-signing Ray Lawrence faced a mixed D team, led by Neil Gooday - dropping down from the B team - supported by Graham Turner and Bill Chester (playing up from Div 5). Bill put in a dazzling display just losing out to Frank at 12:10 in the fifth, but was outgunned by both Nick and Ray. Neil was relatively untroubled just dropping one end to Ray. Graham took a cliff hanger against Nick at 11:5 in the fifth to give the D team a surprise 7:3 victory. Not sure what happened to the E & F teams! But the G team of Division 5 played the H team from Division 6. Led by team captain Diane Pitt the G team of Diane, Colin Gooday and mark Patman proved far too strong for Ron Arthur, Peter Revell and Eric Clift, running out 9:1 winners. Surprisingly the only one to get away was the doubles in which Ron & Peter took a comfortable 3:1 victory over Diane and Mark. So the stage is set for the new season, we wish all the teams well - especially the new emerging junior teams who will be taking 3 team places in Division 6 this season for the first time. they are the J team of Haydn Upson, Rykki Vansertima, Sam Pitt and Philip Twite. This should be a very interesting line-up. the youngest team in the league. The K team of Steve Clift, Laura Pyman, John Mutch and Rob Able. We particularly welcome John and Robert who have joined us from Boswells. Eric has his work cut out managing this gang of teenagers! But they could pull off a few surprises. The third team, the L team, features Tom & Ed Miles, Martyn Chattey and Matthew Shipperd. Apart from Martyn the other 3 have played just one season of table tennis in the Introductory League, but again could spring a few surprises. Mind you Division 6 features some very experienced players! So Good Luck!
