CLUB TOURNAMENT - FUN DOUBLES The Purkiss Robinson Doubles event is always a highlight of the annual club tournament. It's fun and often brings together some very unlikely pairings! And this year was no exception. 34 entrants lined up, and for the first time the handicap was not just your partner! Actual handicaps being allocated to each pairing based on those used for the main singles event. This led to some even more interesting matches. The competition was run on a straight knock out basis. perhaps the most unfortunate pairing were John Patman and Matthew Skeoch the only pair to face a preliminary round to get into the main draw. Their opponents were the experienced pair of Frank Neil and David Gatheral and sadly they fell at the first hurdle but only at 21:15 in the third end after a tense battle. Details of how the event panned out are given below. To find out about the Main event or the Youth Trophy take these links. PURKISS ROBINSON DOUBLES 1st Round
Not many close games in the first round! Unless of course you are Eric & Ralp who scraped through by the skin of their teeth against the youngsters.
Quarter Finals
Top game in the quarter final stage was Frank & David's epic struggle to overcome Diane and Peter. A case where the handicap really did bite.
Semi Finals
After a shaky start Bob & Gareth really got it together, setting up what looked on paper to be an evenly matched final. Ah, but hang on, there are handicaps to be taken into account! And both Steve and Mike were on the receiving end of very generous handicaps - as the main singles event had already proved... FINAL
Steve and Mike were unstoppable in the final hardly needing the massive 10 point handicap advantage to cruise through in convincing style to give Mike a clean sweep in both events in his first year at the club - a very rare achievement. What a way to announce your arrival at the Club! Congratulations.
