NEW VENTURE FOR TOP JUNIORS

Regional Development Officer Mark Dare was the guest coach for a new Club venture. Saturday 15 January saw the start of monthly, 3 hour, Saturday afternoon Elite Training Squads for some of the clubs best juniors and other invited junior guests. Thirteen out of the fourteen invited juniors attended the first squad, led by Mark who was assisted by the Club's four coaches Neil Gooday, Adrian Pitt, Ryan Pitt and Graham Turner. And what an excellent afternoon it proved to be. With play on 8 tables every junior was in action throughout the session with only a brief refreshment break. Mark carefully introduced new regular and irregular exercises, footwork training, and service skills into a varied and fast moving programme. Emphasising fun as well as work, discipline and determination, Mark set out to show just what was achievable, and what might be required to do so! The afternoon ended with a fast round of 'Top Table', which included 3 of the coaches to ensure all 8 tables were in full use. It meant that everyone had a chance to test their skills at all levels.

It is hoped that these extended and intense monthly sessions will lead to further development of the very fine squad of juniors that the Club currently has. All in all an excellent afternoon and a very successful start to an exciting new venture promoting all that is best in table tennis.

Clearly there's something funny going on here, as Mark explains a fine point to Adrian.
