OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES In his first season in the League Club Member 14 year old Bradley Hudgell had the kind of Chelmsford Closed Tournament that some can only dream about! Two gold medals! Bradley's first success came in the Junior Handicap Singles where he came out 12:10, 11:9,11;9 victor over Dacre Pell of ECC. That was followed on Sunday by victory in the 6 Down Singles where he overcame clubmate Sam Pitt in the final 11:4,11:9,6:11,11:8 to secure his second trophy. Continuing a great record that the Club has in the 6 Down Singles.
And there was more success for Club members. Rykki Vansertima retained the U14 Singles, which he won last year as the U13 Singles. In a repeat of last years final he again beat clubmate Haydn Upson in a hard fought encounter 6:11,12:10,11:6,9:11,11:1. But Rykki will still have to go a long way to match his Mum! Julie Vansertima won her 14th Ladies Singles title, again took the Ladies Doubles - with partner Jean Chasmer (Danbury), and retained the Mixed Doubles title with partner David Cole (ECC). A phenomenal record.
16 year old Laura Pyman had to be content this year with runner-up spot in the Girls U18 Singles. In a repeat of last years final she was edged out by her Junior British League team mate Lorna Staff - whom she beat last year. However Laura and Lorna did combine for an excellent run in the Ladies Doubles where unexpectedly they gained the runner-up award.
One of the most popular events of the Tournament Weekend, and perhaps second only to the Men's Singles in playing standard is the 2 Down Singles. Again the Club have a good record in this event. And this year was no exception with Club members Waseem Qureshi and Peter Barrett taking the two final places. Peter triumphing in 3 straight 5,7 & 11. Peter also went on to be runner-up, with partner Kevin Smart (Excalibur), in the Handicap Doubles. Not a bad haul for the Club. Seven winners and six runners-up medals from the twenty events.
