CLUB TAKES TOP JUNIOR AWARD For the third time in five years the Club has taken the top award for a junior in the annual presentation of awards from the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. At the League AGM on the 26 May Bradley Hudgell, on his 15th birthday, was presented with the prestigious Charlie Wheeler Memorial Award by League Chairman Norman Smith. This award is presented to the junior, who in the opinion of the League Management Committee has shown the most outstanding achievement in the League’s Individual Championships. Last year, Steven Clift won this coveted award for his Handicap Singles and Doubles victories. This year, the award went to Bradley who was voted most outstanding junior for his double victories in the Junior Handicap Singles and the 6-Down Singles. This was a truly remarkable achievement for Bradley in his first season in the main league and after only one previous season in CLICK. He has shown enormous improvement throughout the season and further evidence of this was at the end of the season winning the Ted Harris Junior Cup in our own closed tournament. Sincere congratulations to Bradley on his achievements.
Also at the League AGM our ‘A’ team received their Division 2 Winners Trophy after a hugely successful season and will now look forward to their rightful place in Division 1 next season. Well done Waseem, Neil and Peter. Recognition also went to five Baddow Village youngsters who were each rewarded with Junior League Badges for representing Chelmsford in the National Junior League. Alex Stone, Matthew Skeoch, Andrew Orme, Bradley Hudgell and Claire Austin have all now joined the junior circuit at this higher level and are gaining more experience at each round of matches. This indeed bears testament to how beneficial the coaching sessions at Melbourne and Riverside have become. Because of this, we now have a flourishing junior section at the club with a waiting list to join the beginners group.
The League AGM otherwise held few changes. Our own Mike Johnston joined Adrian Pitt, Ryan Pitt and Graham Turner as a member of the League Management Committee, and a number of Rule changes were approved. Perhaps the most interesting of these, and not without some controversy, was the approval to change the point scoring system for League play so that every set of the match counts towards the points total. Full details of the Rule change can be found on the League website. |
