KO CUP SUCCESS

Many of the club's junior players were in action last Friday in the first round of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League's CLICK KO Cup, held at the Melbourne Stadium. And it is great to report that three of the 6 teams taking part have progressed through to the semi-final stage.

13 teams from across the League took part in the first round which was played in groups. There were 5 groups with the winner going through to the next stage, leaving one place for the highest placed runner up.

The Baddow Village A team of Tom Lee and Matthew Davis cruised through their group winning both matches 3:0 despite having some of the heaviest handicaps in the tournament.

Toby & Jack Amos both attend the Melbourne coaching programme,
but on the night  they experienced their first competitive matches
representing the 'luckless' Excalibur C team in Group A,
where they faced the joint favourites Baddow Village A.

Also in Group A were Hylands C,
where Frances Walters and  Freya Hertzberg were drafted in from coaching to represent their school when two players were missing. This was the first competitive match for the girls who acquitted themselves well, beating Excalibur 3:1 but losing out to the group winners.
The picture shows Fran in cup action.

The B team of Clare and James Austin also qualified with 2 wins, but were made to work all the way in their second match by Baddow F (Mitchell McDonald and Michael Whelpdale) before sealing that match 3:2 to qualify.

James Austin has shown real improvement since the start of the season and this was noticeable as he and sister Clare worked their way through the group to take a place in the semi final. But as our photographer says, "where's the ball James"?

You can only describe the C team as a trifle unlucky! Being placed in the same group as joint favourites Hylands A it seemed that Damien Laverty and Gavin Trodd had little chance of qualifying. But a 3:2 win over Baddow E (Patrick Whelpdale and Aled Upson) gave them an outside chance of a highest loser place. In the match against Hylands an 11:9 defeat in the 5th by Damien against the Hylands No.1, an excellent effort, meant the match didn't go to the deciding doubles. The 3:1 defeat leaving the team just 1pt short of what was needed to qualify for the final stage.

Probably the most spirited performance of all the club's teams was by the D team (Scott Dowsett and Brandon Crouchman). They opened with a straight 3:0 win against luckless Excalibur, and then 'worked their socks off' to gain a 3:2 victory over Danbury B (a result which allowed Danbury still to qualify as the highest placed runner-up). Both boys taking 1 singles and then combining to take the doubles 12:10 in the 4th.

Danbury found themselves a player
short on the night and so young
Matthew Clifford was drafted in from
the Melbourne Coaching and became a Danbury player for the evening. Combining with Terry Withers he put in
a tremendous performance enabling his Danbury B side to take the best runner-up place and qualify for a place in the semi final.

The full table for the first round is given below. The first 6 teams qualify for the semi-final stage.
