GIRLS COME OUT ON TOP In the Essex Closed Championships held at Harlow over the weekend 14/15 January it was our junior girls who got the taste of success. 12year old Hannah Pitt raced away with both the U13 and U15 Girls titles without dropping a match. This was a remarkable achievement to take both titles. Not only did she not drop a match but in the U13 event was a convincing 3 straight winner in each match, whilst in the U15 event dropped just 1 game to the eventual runner-up before overpowering her 11:1, 8:11, 11:4, 11:4. One observer notes, "the difference between the boys and girls competitions both in standard of play and attitude towards playing is quite marked and often quite amusing! The boys all seemed highly competitive, even in the youngest age groups. To the girls, the whole thing seemed a bit of a bore really! And they spent considerable amounts of time both in between and during games attending to their hair, nails, chatting and generally socialising"! Glad the girls are both playing and having fun. Don't think though that should take away from a first class performance to take comprehensively both of these events. Very well done Hannah.
It was also a busy weekend for Laura Pyman, playing just 1 week after her 17th birthday she came away with the Girls U18 title dropping just 1 game in the five matches; and that to the runner-up as she recovered from dropping the opening game in the deciding match 3:11 to take the title 11:4, 11:8, 11:9. Laura also took the runner-up title in both the U21 Girls and the Ladies Singles losing out to Kelly Skeggs of Braintree in both events. Laura also took part in the Women's Doubles losing out with partner Holly Stubbings over 5 ends where the key game was the fourth game which Laura & Holly dropped 17:15 to let a 2:1 lead slip away. There was no luck either for Laura in the Mixed Doubles where she came in at the last moment to partner Matthew Spero of Ilford. Unfortunately they lost in the first round to the eventual runners-up.
