Is Summer Over?

No, but the Central Essex Summer League is! Five teams were entered for the Summer League, with three of them ending up in the same division!

The 'A' Team consisting of Neil Gooday, Adrian Pitt and Bradley Hudgell were placed in the top division. This was to be Bradley's first test against real class opposition and a test of progress to see if he is ready for a jump to the big time for the next season! Not only did the team come through with flying colours but Bradley also made his mark, with a couple of excellent wins against genuine first division opposition. Overall the team finished 3rd with 16pts out of a possible 30. The top team scoring just 23. This was a very good achievement.

Bradley & Neil warm up for their CESL Div 1 match as the spectators gather.

The 'B' Team, placed in Div 2, equally impressed. Finishing in 2nd place, just 3 pts short of the top team, who, incidentally, they beat 3:2 in the final match! Their record of 5 out of six wins equalled that of the top team, but with just 21 out of 30pts it wasn't quite enough to secure first place. Nevertheless an excellent performance by the team of Mike Johnston, Frank Neill and Duncan Elloy.

The remaining 3 teams were all placed in the bottom division, Div 4. It was the all stars 'D' Team captained by Eric Clift who fared best in what was quite a strong division for the lowest level. Eric was able to use a range of players including the 'Pitt'  family of Mike, Adam and Ryan as well as Matthew Skeoch. But in a division where the top team could have competed comfortably in the 2nd division the best place they could manage was 3rd. Still a very good achievement of 3 out of 6 wins and 16 out of 30pts.

Don't know about 'all stars', seems more like 'all colours' as the multi-coloured Mike Pitt warms up for CESL Div 4 match with D team captain Eric Clift.

Adam & Mike Pitt and Matthew Skeoch, 3 of the 5 man D Team. But who's the little guy in the middle...?

The 'C' Team was also an all 'Pitt' affair. The other ones! Diane, Hannah and Samuel. They also managed a creditable 3 wins out of 6 with Hannah proving to be the star of the show. But with just 14pts they had to settle for 5th place.

Yes, it's the Pitts! Diane & Hannah, stars of the C Team in Div 4 of the CESL

And finally the 'E' team. This was an experimental team to give youngsters Tom Lee and Matthew Davis their first taste of league table tennis as they seek to move up from CLICK into the League proper for the next season. They were supported by Jacqui Smith. And all three players acquitted themselves well. Although the team finished bottom of the division with just 7pts each player won 2 matches, which was extremely good having regard to the standard of the division and their relative inexperience.

Come on you blues! Not quite matching T shirts as Jacqui and Matthew prepare for their E Team match in CESL Div4. The experience gained should prove a great help as Matthew prepares for life in The League!
