Juniors Give Top Performance

The Baddow Village A team closed the gap on their nearest rivals Three E's I in the second round of matches in the London North National Junior League played at the Ellenborough TTC in Enfield on Saturday 20 January.

A brilliant performance on the day saw the team, of Bradley Hudgell, Dacre Pell and Phil Twite, undefeated in this round of matches including a first class reversal of their only defeat in the first round of matches when they toppled leaders Three E's I 4:2. They are now just 1 point behind the leaders with one more round of matches to play. Bradley stayed unbeaten on the day with Dacre taking 7 out of 8 and Phil a very useful 3 out of 6. Adam Pitt also played up for 1 match taking his 2 singles. A first class team performance. The highlights were the two matches against Three E's I & II. Against the leaders Dacre excelled with a 3:1 win over the Three E's No.1 player, then Bradley fought back from 2 down against the same player to take the set 3:2 with an 11:9 in the 5th win. Dacre sealed the match with a 3:1 win in the final set. The team went straight on again to play the Three E's II team. And perhaps it was the euphoria of the previous success which saw Dacre in his very next match slip up against the Three E's No.1 for his only defeat of the day. But Phil made sure the A Team stayed ahead with a vital win over the opposing No.3. These two very useful 4:2 wins meant the A Team topped the group on the day with a perfect 10 pts and closed the gap on the division leaders to just 1pt.

Not quite sure what happened to the team colours!

The Club took a large B Team squad on this occasion. 5 players, Adam Pitt, Matthew Skeoch, Claire Austin, Tom Lee and Roland Johnson. And perhaps it was just as well we did. At least 3 teams from other clubs found themselves a player short and the extra Baddow players were therefore able to gain valuable extra experience by substituting for the other teams. This allowed most of the players to get at least 1 match in the top division, and there they acquitted themselves very well.

The B team continue to top the table in Division 2 and again came out on top on the day. But in this round of matches they were pushed all the way by a strong side from Mayfield who were unable to play in the first round of matches. The strength of the two sides was well illustrated when they played each other in the final group encounter of the day, the match finishing all square with each of the Baddow players, Adam, Matt and Tom taking 1-a-piece. The other 3 group matches on the day resulting in confident 5:1 wins. Tom made an excellent debut with 5 out of 6 wins, and Claire kept a clean sheet with 4 out of 4, Adam & Roland both finished with 3 out of 4 and Matt, generally playing at either No.1 or 2 found himself a little disappointed on the day with his 3 out of 6. A very good all round team effort.

Both teams also had 1 friendly match on the day to make the total number of matches for each team up to the expected 5. The A team won theirs convincingly against Div 2 opposition. The B Team however put in a tremendous performance against Three E's II (who finished 3rd in Div 1). In a very close run match the team went down 4:2 with Tom defeating the No.2 and only just losing out over 5 ends to the No.1 in a tremendous battle. Roland also took 1 in this match beating the No.3 over 5 ends. Claire couldn't quite match this success but nevertheless put in a very good performance.
